GENERAL INFORMATION
Summer Prague University is a special Czech language program designed for students of all levels. It has been organized by SF servis language school, a company run by the Student Council of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University and held in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic annually since 1990. The program is intended for undergraduate students, as well as businessmen or prospective residents in the Czech Republic. The program consists of grammar lessons as well as communication activities; lessons are taught by native Czechs who gained their academic credentials at the Czech Language Department of the Faculty of Arts and through teaching with our language school.

Structure of Classes
The courses consist of 75 lessons divided into morning and afternoon parts. The morning program is based mainly on language classes concentrating on grammar, and the afternoon program covers communicative activities – communicative chains, practical stylistics, reading of texts, etc.

Courses
Students are divided into several levels based on their result from the initial written placement test, which tests grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and composition skills. If necessary, the placement test is followed by a short conversation with a Czech classes manager to determine the level of the student's communicative ability. | Elementary (A1): |
The Elementary course is designed for students with no prior or very basic knowledge of Czech. This course will introduce students to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. During a three-week program students will master essential grammar patterns, pronunciation, basic vocabulary and phrases. Conversation will emphasize the development of vocabulary and Czech grammar skills necessary for basic conversation (including telephone calls, shopping, daily routine, family, job, etc.). After finishing this course students can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases and interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. Language instruction will be held in class and special emphasis will be given to applying vocabulary in various situations outside the classroom. The language of instruction is English, with a gradually increasing amount of simplified Czech. |
| Pre-Intermediate (A2): |
The Pre-Intermediate course is designed for students with at least 1-2 semesters (100-200 hours) of prior study of Czech; it is assumed that students have mastered pronunciation and essential grammar patterns necessary for creating a short text in the present and past tenses, vocabulary is about 1000 words. This course will further develop vocabulary, and introduce students to more complex sentence structure and higher level grammatical skills. Grammar will include further development of existing knowledge: the verb to be, basic numbers, present tense of verbs, etc. New grammar will include declension of nouns and adjectives, past tense of irregular verbs, modal verbs, etc. The main objective of this course is to enhance the students' abilities to converse on a variety of topics such as family, parts of the body, hobbies, travelling, city, weather, etc. Language instruction will be held in class and special emphasis will be given to applying vocabulary in various situations outside the classroom. The language of instruction is mainly Czech. |
| Intermediate (B1): |
The Intermediate course is designed for students with at least 1 year of prior study of Czech, or their current knowledge of Czech corresponds to A2 level of the CEFR. The main objective of this course is to enhance the students' abilities to converse freely on a variety of topics such as work, study, leisure time, etc., to understand the gist of selected newspaper articles, TV news and Media broadcast, to write short simple texts on topics which are familiar or of a personal interest. Grammar will include a selection of more difficult aspects of Czech grammar: perfective and imperfective verbs, prefixes, comparative and superlative of adjectives and adverbs, declension of numerals, etc. Language instruction will be held in class and special emphasis will be given to applying vocabulary in various situations outside the classroom. Aside from grammar the students will concentrate on reading and analyzing authentic texts, listening to recordings, acquiring fluency and competency in speaking and writing. The language of instruction is Czech. |
| Advanced (B2): |
The Advanced course is designed to move learners from a stage where they have achieved all the basic grammatical skills, to being able to use language in a wider cultural context. Advanced students can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics and can communicate on a variety of more complex topics such as personality, communication and media, culture, etc. The main objective of the course is enhance the student’s abilities to use language for social, academic and professional purposes, understand literary and professional texts and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subject. Grammar-oriented lessons will concentrate on declension of nouns of foreign origin, word formation, conjunctions, word order, etc. Language instruction will be held in class and special emphasis will be given to applying vocabulary in various situations outside the classroom. Aside from grammar the students will concentrate on reading and analyzing authentic texts, listening to recordings, acquiring fluency and competency in speaking and writing. The language of instruction is exclusively Czech. |
Teachers and Organizers
Summer Prague University is organized by SF Servis s.r.o., a company run by the Student Council of Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague.
SPU teachers are native Czechs who are graduates form the Czech Language Department of Charles University in Prague and who gained their professional experience throught teaching practice with our language school. They, together with the organizers, emphasize close student-teacher contact to make the working environment as efficient as possible.
